We graded 41 NDP MLAs on whether they listen to you. 39 failed.
Forty-one BC NDP MLAs are asking for your vote again on 24 October. We read their campaign accounts and graded every one of them on whether they answer you. Their campaign posts on X drew 94,850 replies. They replied 195 times on X, Facebook and Instagram, and only 54 of those replies answered a critic or a question with substance; the rest went to their own side or brushed critics off. Fifteen limited who could reply at all. Thirty-nine of the 41 fail our report card, including Jessie Sunner, who wrote that “People deserve candidates who show up and answer questions.”
Five days before advance voting, Brittny Anderson, the Minister of State for Local Governments and Rural Communities and candidate in Kootenay Central, told her Facebook followers what kind of representative she is. She is, she wrote, “someone who spends a lot of time listening to communities”.12

Brittny AndersonBrittnyAndersonBCNDP
about 16 Oct 2026Earlier this week, the BC NDP shared new steps to protect the natural spaces that shape our lives in British Columbia. As someone who spends a lot of time listening to communities, walking local trails, and working with people who care deeply about our forests and watersheds, this direction feels meaningful.
The plan focuses on expanding protections for old growth and sensitive ecosystems, strengthening watershed security, and setting clearer standards for emerging industries so environmental health stays at the center of decision making. It also highlights the goal of conserving 30 percent of B.C.’s land and water by 2030, something many scientists and community leaders have been urging for years.
For me, this work is personal. The places we love are not abstract policy areas. They are the rivers that hold our history, the forests that teach us resilience, and the landscapes our kids will inherit. Protecting them is part of caring for each other.
Vote for me, vote BC NDP.

Anderson says she spends a lot of time listening. Text copied from her post, read on 17 October.12
Her replies tell a different story. We read every reply she posted on X during the campaign and every Facebook comment thread under her campaign posts that we could open. We found 36 replies from her. With critics, she argues the party line or mocks them: 16 of her replies answered a critic or a question with substance, 6 brushed a critic off and 6 mocked or attacked one. She also limited who could comment on 11 of her 85 Facebook campaign posts.1345
Some of her answers have substance. Asked why the election could not wait, she replied:

We could have waited a few weeks but the writ needed to be dropped BEFORE we started session in early October because after Joan’s death we didn’t have the number seats needed for a majority government and Emily ripped up our agreement with the Greens a year ago.
A real answer to a real question: her party’s case for the snap election.13
More often, the critic gets a put-down. These are her words, under her own campaign posts; we have removed the names and hometowns of the people she was answering.

Her reply to a commenter who said he would vote Conservative. Spelling as she wrote it.13
On X her only replies went to Shachi Kurl, the president of the Angus Reid Institute, who had hosted the leaders’ debate and posted about abuse from viewers. One of them turned on the host’s critics.14

Thank you for your professionalism.
It is really easy to be a know it all with a superiority complex keyboard warrior wearing dirty sweatpants in a basement.
It is hard to be an unbiased professional debate host.
Anderson’s reply to the debate host.14
Her party runs its own channel more tightly still: all 30 of its campaign videos on YouTube have comments turned off, while the Conservatives and Greens left theirs open.1215
She is not the exception. David Eby, the Premier, drew 57,292 replies to his campaign posts on X and answered none of them. Across all 41 BC NDP MLAs running again, their campaign posts on X drew 94,850 replies. They posted 195 replies of their own on X, Facebook and Instagram, and only 54 of those answered a critic or a question with substance; 95 went to supporters, their own party or small talk, and the rest brushed critics off or mocked them. Thirty-nine of the 41 fail our report card.46
In our view, the party that asks for your vote online has mostly stopped listening there, and a minister who writes that she spends her time listening owes her critics answers, not put-downs.
01 We graded all 41 NDP incumbents on whether they answer you, and what we could not see earned no credit
Forty-one BC NDP MLAs are running again, 24 of them in cabinet.2 We read their accounts from the day the House was dissolved, 22 September, to 17 October: 3,116 campaign posts and reposts, every reply each of them made on X, and the comments under their Facebook and Instagram posts.345 Each MLA is graded on four measures, and each measure is a Pass or a Fail.
Did they answer a critic or a question in public, with substance?
Pass: at least one such reply during the campaign. Replies to supporters, their own party, thanks, small talk, brush-offs and mockery do not count.
Could anyone reply to them?
Pass: replies open on every campaign post we read. Fail: limited on any of them, or no post to read.
Did they post during the campaign on any account a voter can find?
Pass: at least one campaign post.
Were their posts their own, or reposts of other accounts?
Pass: they wrote at least half of the campaign items we read.
If they didn’t answer anyone, or limited who could answer them, they fail. If we could not find it in public, they get no credit. A passing MLA earns an A when the words are mostly their own, and a B when they are mostly reposts.
The charts below hold everything we read: every MLA, every measure, every post. Sort and filter them, or tap a name to see the evidence. The argument picks up after them.
Coverage: 108 accounts found for the 41 incumbents, 96 read; 3,116 campaign posts and reposts read, plus 195 replies the incumbents made; reply settings read on 2,278 posts.

02 NDP incumbents told voters they were listening. Their posts drew thousands of replies, and they answered none
Anderson was not the only one to promise conversation. Here is what six incumbents posted during the campaign, set against the replies their campaign posts on X drew and the critics they answered.

Jessie Sunner, the Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, went further. On 16 October she scolded eight Conservative candidates for skipping a Surrey business debate: “People deserve candidates who show up and answer questions.” Four of the five people who replied to that post challenged her. She answered none of them, or any of the 1,888 replies her campaign posts had drawn, and on Facebook she let only people who had followed her page for a day comment on 14 of her 20 Facebook campaign posts.15

We were there to discuss real plans to improve transit, lower costs and give Surrey more control over its future.
People deserve candidates who show up and answer questions. (2/2)

Sunner says candidates should answer questions. Four of the five replies challenged her, and she answered none.1
Begg’s post is the plainest case. He wrote that he was listening to his neighbours, and 116 people answered him under that one post. He replied to none of them, or to anyone else, all campaign.74

Garry Begg@GarryBeggBC
4 Oct 2026, 5:25 p.m.We’re knocking on doors, listening to our neighbours and working hard to earn your support once again.

Begg says he is listening. His campaign posts drew 2,956 replies, and he answered none.7
The Premier, David Eby, has the biggest audience of all. His 110 campaign posts on X drew 57,292 replies, and we found no reply from him to anyone. Ravi Parmar, the Minister of Forests, drew 11,212 and answered none.4
03 When NDP incumbents did reply, 141 of their 195 replies went to their own side or brushed critics off
We found 195 replies by the 41 incumbents on X, Facebook and Instagram during the campaign, and we sorted every one by whom it went to and what it did.6 Only 54 answered a critic or a question with substance.
Substantive answers to critics came from Brittny Anderson (16), Harwinder Sandhu (16), Bowinn Ma (12), Grace Lore (4), Spencer Chandra Herbert (3), Jennifer Blatherwick (1), Steve Morissette (1), Sheila Malcolmson (1).
Bowinn Ma, the Minister of Infrastructure and candidate in North Vancouver-Lonsdale, told a voter who asked whether the government had cancelled long-term care projects: “No. We did not. We paused several of them due to cost escalations.” Grace Lore, the Minister without Portfolio and candidate in Victoria-Beacon Hill, argued for two days on X with people who had shared a photo of a person in distress. Lore fails our report card, because she limited comments on most of her Instagram campaign posts.65
Bowinn Ma and Jennifer Blatherwick are the only incumbents to pass our report card. Jennifer Blatherwick, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, passes on one Facebook reply: asked whether a winter shelter would run this year, she said that everything she had heard confirmed it was going forward starting in October.
Two incumbents answered critics often and still fail. Brittny Anderson and Harwinder Sandhu, the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and candidate in Vernon-Lumby each answered a critic with substance 16 and 16 times on Facebook, but both limited who could comment on some of their campaign posts, and both also brushed critics off or mocked them.65
Most of the rest replied only to their own side, or not at all. Sheila Malcolmson answered Josie Osborne and Richard Zussman, both NDP candidates. Adrian Dix answered the Premier. Susie Chant answered Garry Begg. Most of George Anderson’s replies thanked supporters, and to a person who had written “F--- off.” he sent a GIF of a snowflake.6
In our view, a candidate who answers only the people who already agree is not listening. They are collecting applause.
04 Fifteen NDP incumbents limited who could reply, some on the very posts that praised conversation
Fifteen incumbents limited replies on at least one campaign post we read.54 Limiting replies is legal, and every platform offers it. It is also a choice about whom a candidate will hear from while asking for votes.

Spencer Chandra Herbert limited replies on 31 of his 32 campaign posts on X. One of them celebrated “Great conversations” on a West End street corner.16

Spencer Chandra Herbert@SChandraHerbert
3 Oct 2026, 1:57 p.m.Great conversations on Davie and Thurlow! I hope you’re enjoying the sun as much as we are.

The conversations were on the street. On X, he decided who could join them.16
Terry Yung, the Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services and candidate in Vancouver-Yaletown set all five of his campaign posts on X so that only accounts he mentions could reply, and none of his Instagram campaign posts showed a comment box.17
On Facebook the limits run deeper than one post. Steve Morissette, the Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development and candidate in Kootenay-Monashee, let only people who had followed his page for more than a day comment on most of his campaign posts: 37 of 43 of his Facebook campaign posts we read. Josie Osborne did the same on 20 of 27 of her Facebook campaign posts we read.5
In our view, a candidate who praises conversation and then decides who may take part is having it on their own terms.
05 A campaign account is where a candidate asks for your vote. It should also be where they answer you
The silence is not for want of being asked. Their campaign posts on X drew 94,850 replies, and the incumbents posted 195 replies of their own. Only 54 of those answered a critic or a question with substance.46
Some of what lands under a politician’s post is abuse, and nobody owes abuse an answer. But the questions were there too, under posts about listening, conversation and answers. In our view, a candidate who will not answer a civil question where everyone can see it is telling voters whom the account is for.
You can test it yourself before 24 October. Ask your NDP incumbent one question, in a reply under one of their own campaign posts, and see whether it is answered.

We graded 41 NDP MLAs on whether they listen to you. 39 failed.
Their campaign posts on X drew 94,850 replies. They replied 195 times; only 54 of those replies answered a critic or a question with substance.
Fifteen limited who could reply. Thirty-nine of the 41 fail our report card.
Jessie Sunner wrote that “People deserve candidates who show up and answer questions.” She answered none of the 1,888 replies to her own posts.
Ask your NDP incumbent one question, under their own post, and see if they answer.
